After a childhood marked by abandonment and upheaval, he discovered his voice and healing through art. Raised between Hawaii and New York, Kirk’s life was shaped by cultural contrasts, personal hardship, and ultimately, transformation. His gift for visual storytelling emerged early—and never left.

 

In addition to his work with adults in recovery and incarceration, Kirk is also the author and illustrator of the I Want to Be series, a collection of children’s books that encourages young readers to explore hobbies and careers. He believes people should do what they love and love what they do.

 

In 2015, following years of addiction and incarceration, Kirk created Art Inside Out—now an evidence-based program—to help others in prison reconnect with their value through emotional literacy and creative expression. It remains a groundbreaking curriculum for restorative programming today.

 

Through his art, books, and teaching, Kirk proves that transformation is possible, and that purpose can be found even in the most unlikely places.
